Becoming an Adult

The other day I was reading a magazine and in the back it had a section called "You know you are an adult when...".  Then listed below people had written in stating at what point you know you have become an adult.  As I have embarked on a major job hunt for my first "grown up" job it got me thinking, at what point do you officially become an adult?  Is it when you move out out of your parent's house?  Or when you stop calling them every time you need money?  Is it when you turn 18 or 21?  When you buy your first house?  I am not sure that there is one specific point where to transition from a child or young man or woman to an adult but the following are some indicators from my life that have paved the transition.

  • When you get up and go to bed of your own accord with out someone telling you to.
  • When you see the need to establish a budget and not just call mom or dad.
  • When you know the difference between a need and a want.
  • When you call and make your own appointments.
  • When you realize the choices you make impact more than just your self.
  • You know the definition of business and business casual and have the appropriate attire for those occasions.
  • When monthly bills start coming in your name and not to your parents.
  • When you know not only what you believe but why you believe it.
  • When you are not afraid to stand up for what you believe in.
  • When you understand that your words hold meaning and power and therefore you choose them carefully.
  • When grace is something you extend to others.
  • When you realize that the world does not revolve around you.
I am sure I could think of many more examples from my own life but these are the ones that came to mind first.  So what about you?  What are some things from your life that have shown that you are an adult?

Love from Liberty,
Peggy
